The Young Adult Award of Excellence, introduced for the first time in 2005, represents CHHA’s ongoing commitment to supporting young adults who are hard of hearing and to acknowledge the vital role they play in the sustainability of CHHA.
The purpose of the Young Adult Award of Excellence is to recognize an individual who demonstrates outstanding personal, community, and/or professional activities in the area of hearing loss. CHHA acknowledges that excellent achievement can take many forms such as overcoming personal barriers, advocating for the rights of persons who are hard of hearing, and volunteering in the community and not-for-profit organizations.
- Nominee must be no less than 18 and no more than 29 years of age at any time in the calendar year in which the award is given.
- Nominee must have a permanent hearing loss in one or both ears (any degree or configuration) and use speech as his/her preferred mode of communication.
- Nominee may or may not be a member of CHHA at the time of the nomination.AND 1 or more of the following:
- Personal Achievement: The nominee demonstrates perseverance and/or innovative solutions to his/her own hearing-related barriers in social, academic, and/or professional life.
- Community Involvement: The nominee demonstrates ongoing commitment to helping not-for-profit hard of hearing groups or individuals. This may include giving workshops or presentations, working on committees, developing peer support groups, and/or setting up social or professional events for persons who are hard of hearing.
- Hearing-related Publications or Projects: The nominee promotes public awareness of hard of hearing issues through the publication of his/her written work(s) or project(s). For published works, the nomination should include an abstract of the article and where it was featured. For projects, the nomination should include an abstract of the project, the role of the nominee, and whether or not it is in partnership with other organizations. The project may be either ongoing or completed.
Award Requirements
Nominations must include a pertinent, biological sketch, of no more than 500 words, of the nominee and a complete description of the nominee’s activities.
