Message from the Executive Director

From the Desk of Christopher Sutton
National Executive Director
Canadian Hard of Hearing Association

Welcome to this issue of I Listen. In this edition you will learn more about work we have been doing on your behalf to ensure that all people living with hearing loss live in a barrier-free society.

As most of you are aware, Bill C-81: An Accessible Canada Act was introduced into Parliament in June. I was honoured to represent CHHA and inform the committee on key points for those living with hearing loss and how to improve this Bill. We are thrilled that the Bill recently passed in Parliament and is now making its way to the Senate for review. We will be working hard on your behalf to ensure that this legislation is passed in 2019!

In November, we held our first National Youth Forum for hard of hearing youth in Ottawa. Over 75 youth from coast to coast to coast were able to attend. It was an event that was very empowering and one that will impact the lives of all those who attended. I would like to thank everyone for their support of this event and to acknowledge our sponsors: Hearing Life Canada, Oticon Medical, Cochlear Canada, Let’s Loop Canada, Acoustic Wear, Canadian Hard of Hearing Association Foundation, CHHA Newfoundland and Labrador, CHHA BC, CHHA Sudbury, Unitron, CHHA Vancouver, CHHA NCR and the Department of Canadian Heritage.

I am also pleased that more information is now available on our upcoming 2019 CHHA Educational Conference and Trade Show that will be taking place in Montreal, QC, May 30-June 2, 2019. Please visit the conference website to find information on items such as the program, hotel and travel information. Registration will be posted in the next few weeks. We have some changes in store this year and look forward to communicating these with you in the months to come.  We look forward to seeing you in Montreal!

I hope you enjoy all the information we have to share in this issue. These are just a few highlights of all the work we’ve been able to do on your behalf. As we approach 2019, I am excited to see the future and the impact our work will have on ensuring all people with hearing loss are able to live without barriers.
