Youth Project

There were two phases to the Youth Project.

Phase I

Over a 12-month period, from April 1st to March 31, 2003 a Youth Leadership Project was undertaken by the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association with funding provided by Human Resource Development Canada. There were four components to the project as follows:

Leslee Scott was hired as Coordinator of the project in June, 2002. Ruth Warick, Chair of the CHHA Youth Project Committee managed the project with input from committee members Marilyn Dahl, Bob Sochowski, Carole Theberge and Janice McNamara, Executive Director of CHHA. The CHHA office, under Ms. McNamara's leadership, handled the financial management of the project.

The proposed intent of the program was to assist young people with hearing loss to:

Pam Spencer facilitated an initial workshop held in Ottawa in May, 2002. Eighteen teens and young adults with varying levels of hearing loss attended from different parts of the country. This workshop was a precursor to subsequent workshops.

In June, 2002, Leslee Scott began developing the leadership manual and developing the promotion and delivery of four pilot leadership workshops in the following regions: British Columbia (to include the Yukon), Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba (including NWT), Ontario and the Maritimes

The leadership curriculum was developed so that it could be delivered in modules on a subsequent basis thereafter and potentially could be modified for a general leadership curriculum for CHHA branches and chapters. The intent is that these workshops could then be delivered by a CHHA facilitator.

Phase II

Youth WorkshopFrom July 18, 2003 to June 30, 2004, Phase II of the "Leadership Development - Building Towards the Future" Project was undertaken by the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association with funds provided by the Government of Canada's Social Development Partnership's Program.

Phase II was originally designed to terminate March 31, 2004 but the timeline and funding was upwardly amended to add an additional goal to the project and subsequently conclude on June 30, 2004.

The main goal of Phase II was to ensure continued involvement of the youth who participated in Phase I of the CHHA Leadership Development Project. This portion would involve bringing a selection of these previously trained youth leaders, ages 18-29, together to give their feedback and comments on Phase I of the Leadership Development Project that occurred from May 2002 to April 2003.
