Gael Hannan grew up with a progressive hearing loss that is now severe-to-profound. She is the Vice-president and Immediate Past President of the Ontario Chapter of CHHA. Her hearing loss advocacy includes speech reading instruction, hearing awareness presentations to adults and children, and work on various access committees.

Gael created a 2002 national awareness campaign on infant hearing screening for the Hearing Foundation of Canada, with articles and reviews having been published in Hearing Health, Vibes and Abilities. Gael also wrote employment-related manuals for the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association and the Canadian Hearing Society.

Gael is a sought after speaker for her humorous and insightful presentations about hearing loss. She and her writing partner Dalene Uveges developed "Unheard Voices", a one-woman play that illuminates the impact of hearing loss on a person's life and relationships, also available on video. Gael presented "Unheard Voices" in her Keynote Address at the Self Help for Hard of Hearing People's 2002 National Convention. In 2001 she was the first recipient of CHHA's "Lynn Wheadon Award for Education" in honour of the play.
